WHAT IS A POD-STYLE VAPE KIT?
Pod kits are recommended for vapers of all experience levels. Their simplicity and minimal upkeep have classically made them a favourite with beginner vapers. They’re not just for beginners, though. Small enough to fit in your pocket or bag they offer a convenient solution for experienced vapers. At the same time, they’re less complex and very discreet which makes them the ideal option when you’re on the go, or when you find yourself in situations where a traditional vape kit may be too big to take with you.
Each kit is made up of a battery that generates power and a pod that holds a coil and e-liquid. So, they work in exactly the same way as any other vape kit, except rather than a tank they use a plastic pod (which is often disposable). There are two main types of pod kit on offer, refillable and prefilled, which means you can pick a kit which uses pods that are already filled with e-liquid, or one that features empty pods that you can fill with an e-liquid of your choice.
ARE POD KITS EASY TO USE?
In a word, yes. One of the major benefits of a pod style vape kit is that they are very easy to use and maintain. This is an intentional part of their design. The majority of models are either inhale activated or single-button operation.
As you can probably guess from its name, the inhale activated pod kit can be used by inhaling on the mouthpiece, offering a more natural vape style, similar to puffing on a cigarette. The single button operation pod kit, on the other hand, features a combined power/locking button. Vaping is only a click away with these kits and the option of locking them makes them safer to carry in a bag or pocket.
WHICH E-LIQUID WORKS BEST WITH MY POD KIT?
If you’re using a prefilled vape kit, you won’t have to worry about this - the manufacturer will have picked an e-liquid that’s guaranteed to work perfectly with your kit of choice. When you’re using a refillable pod kit you can pick an e-liquid that suits you best.
Aside from flavour, the two points to focus on will be the VG/PG ratio and nicotine strength. Most pod kits have been designed for Mouth To Lung (MTL) vaping, as such they work best with a thinner e-liquid that has a higher PG content, we recommend an e-liquid that contains 50% VG or less. If you’re using a sub ohm pod kit you can use e-liquids with 50% VG or higher.
When it comes to picking a nicotine strength, you should consider which kit you’re using. A sub ohm pod kit will produce a larger amount of vapour and as such should be paired with an e-liquid that has no higher than a 6mg nicotine strength. With a classic, MTL pod kit, however, you can use any strength you want. This gives you a good chance to experiment and find the one that’s right for you. For more information on picking your perfect strength, we recommend taking a look at our Beginner’s Guide To E-Liquid.
WHICH TYPE OF POD KIT SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Aside from the operation style, there are two main types of pod kit. Both have proven a hit amongst vapers and there’s no wrong choice. Which kit you pick will depend on how much time and effort you want to spend maintaining your kit.
By far the simplest option, the prefilled pod vape kit arrives with pods already filled with e-liquid, once empty the pod can be replaced with another one from the same range. So, you’ll never have to change a coil or refill a pod yourself. The refillable pod kit, while requiring a little more attention, does give you the option of picking your own e-liquid.
This gives you a lot more choice, while at the same time saving you money. Cost-effectiveness has always been a key element of vape kits. Simply put, the more you do yourself the more money you’ll save. Just like how rolling your own cigarettes is cheaper than buying a box of ready-made cigarettes, a refillable pod will be cheaper in the long run than a prefilled model, and a pod kit with changeable coils is cheaper still.
WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF POD KITS?
We recommend pod kits to all vapers because of how simple they are, but are they the right choice for you? Pod kits are available at different price points, which means that while they’re all cheaper than smoking, you’ll very quickly be able to find one that fits your budget. At the same time, the option of prefilled, refillable and pods with removable coils on offer means you’ll find one that requires a level of maintenance you feel comfortable with.
That being said pod kits do have their limitations. Their small size often means a smaller battery, which in turns means reduced battery life. Prefilled pods while convenient mean you can be stuck with a small range of flavours and nicotine strengths. Refillable pods do not have this limitation, and there are also versions with replaceable coils, although these will require more upkeep. Overall, though, the pod kit is an extremely versatile option for all vapers.
