Vape Battery Buyer Guides

Acting as the power source for vape kits, batteries are important to understand. If you’re going to use advanced kits, you’re going to need a thorough understanding of removable batteries in particular. Our battery guide section contains important information on battery safety, picking the right model and more.

WHAT BATTERIES ARE USED IN VAPE MODS?

Vape batteries whether built-in or removable are almost always Lithium-Ion. Li-ion batteries were chosen as they’re rechargeable, portable and already proven to be effective with conventional electronics of all sizes. These vape batteries will provide the power your kit needs to turn e-liquid into vapour and different versions have been created to support the individual’s vaping needs.

BUILT-IN OR REMOVABLE BATTERIES

Built-in batteries are the simpler option for vape kits and mods, featured in a wide variety of models designed for vapers of all experience levels. By choosing a mod with a built-in battery you won’t have to invest in extra batteries or a dedicated charger, instead, you can use a USB cable to charge the entire device. Although simple, built-in batteries do have their limitations - once out of charge your device will be unusable until charged again. Eventually, all batteries will lose their ability to be recharged, as they can not be removed you will be expected to replace your entire device.

Removable batteries, on the other hand, have none of the limitations of a built-in battery. When a removable battery runs out of charge it can be replaced with another, meaning you can keep using your kit without any delays. The small size of each battery also means it’s easy to carry a spare with you (never carry a battery loose, always use a sleeve or case). As versatile as these power sources are, you will be expected to invest in a charger and very few (if any) come with removable batteries as part of the kit - they will have to be purchased separately.

WHAT VAPE BATTERY SHOULD I USE IN MY MOD?

You can’t pair up any vape battery with your vape device, you have to make sure it’s the right type and that it will deliver the right amount of power to support your kit’s needs. There are three main types of battery and they are grouped by their size - 18650, 20700 and 21700.

18650 BATTERIES

18650 vape batteries are easily the most popular type of removable battery - they offer a good balance between power and output. There are a wide range of 18650 vape kits on offer, designed to support both mouth to lung and direct to lung vaping. You’ll find 18650 batteries that feature different capacities and power levels to suit your needs.

20700 BATTERIES

20700 batteries are larger than 18650s and quickly became popular as they could support a higher power output for longer - making them a big hit with sub ohm vapers. 20700 vape kits are generally very advanced and there are versions available that use single and dual 20700 batteries.

21700 BATTERIES

Slightly bigger than 20700 model, 21700 batteries offer a boost in both power and capacity. Generally reserved for kits and mods with top-end power outputs, these batteries and the vape kits that use them will support sub ohm vaping and high wattage vaping.

ARE VAPE BATTERIES SAFE?

Vape batteries are as safe as any other kind of battery as long as they are used, charged and stored correctly. Proper care is vital and will not only keep your batteries in good working order, it will ensure you stay protected too. When we talk about proper care, we mean checking the condition of your batteries - making sure they’re in good working order. It also means charging them correctly, which is easy thanks to the large number of dedicated chargers on offer. There’s also the storage and transport of batteries, they should never be carried loose, instead, we recommend investing in a case or sleeve. For more information check out our Battery Safety Guide.

HOW LONG DO VAPE BATTERIES LAST BETWEEN CHARGES?

How long your batteries will last depends on how they’re used and their power/capacity ratio. Capacity which dictates battery life is measured in mAh (milliAmp hour) and Current which dictates power is measured in Amps. Batteries with a higher capacity will have a lower Amp rating and vice versa. This means that powerful batteries won’t last as long as weaker versions.

So, if you’re looking for a longer-lasting battery, one with a capacity above 2900mAh is a good bet, but remember they may struggle to reach high wattages at a fast enough rate. With that in mind, it’s important to take a look at the resistance of your coils and the wattage output of your kit. Unsurprisingly, low resistance coils used at a high wattage will drain your battery faster than more economical high resistance builds.

HOW TO DISPOSE OF A VAPE BATTERY?

When your battery reaches the end of its life cycle it’s vital to dispose of it properly. Collection containers can be found at many retail stores where they will be collected and recycled by the local authority. Batteries should never be thrown away with household rubbish.

The average 18650 battery will last between 200 - 500 charge cycles (a full charge and discharge of a battery). This means depending on how heavily you use your battery, they’ll last upwards of eighteen months before needing to be replaced. Over time you’ll notice that batteries discharge faster and take less time to charge as their capacity diminishes. So when you notice a decline in performance, it’s a good time to arrange a replacement.
