E-Liquid FAQ
What Is E-Liquid?
E-liquid, also known as vape juice or vape liquid, is the flavoured liquid used inside every type of vape kit. When you activate your kit, the e-liquid is heated up, creating the visible vapour that is inhaled and exhaled. It is arguably the most important part of your vaping experience as it delivers the nicotine to satisfy your cravings.
What's In Vape Juice?
Vape juice contains four main ingredients: VG (Vegetable Glycerin), PG (Propylene Glycol), nicotine and flavourings. There′s no tobacco inside your vape and no combustion occurs either, which means you won′t encounter any of the tar or carcinogens associated with the two.

What Are VG & PG?
VG and PG have very important jobs: they create vapour, as well as carry nicotine and flavour. They′re also responsible for creating the sensation known as ‘throat hit′ – that feeling on the back of your throat when you inhale, that′s similar to a cigarette.
PG (Propylene Glycol) is a runny liquid that′s about as thick as water. It creates a smaller amount of vapour and is slightly better at carrying flavour than VG. It also delivers a stronger throat hit.
VG (Vegetable Glycerin) is a thicker liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup, it creates more vapour than PG and at the same time delivers less of a throat hit.
Most e-liquids use a combination of both VG and PG, this is called an e-liquid′s VG/PG ratio.
- Thicker Liquid
- More Vapour
- Smoother Throat Hit
- Thinner Liquid
- Less Vapour
- Strong Throat Hit
What Are VG / PG Ratios?
The amount of VG and PG in your e-liquid will add up to 100%. So, if your e-liquid contains 50% VG it will also contain 50% PG – often referred to as 50/50 e-liquid. This is the same for any amount; a 70% VG e-liquid will contain 30% PG (70/30 e-liquid) and a 40% PG e-liquid will contain 60% VG.
The VG/PG ratio you need to select will depend on what type of kit you′re using. We always tell you on the product page what the best VG/PG ratio is for any kit.
What E-Liquid Should I Use with MTL Vape Kits?
Vape pens, pod kits and most other MTL (Mouth To Lung) kits are some of the best choices for beginner vapers. They′re small, simple to use and are a good way to get used to the idea of vaping. Picking an e-liquid for these kits is just as simple: stick with a 50/50 or high PG juice, because these kits are designed to work with a thinner e=liquid. When combined, you′ll experience discreet vapour production that feels like a cigarette.
What E-Liquid Is Best For A Sub Ohm Vape Kit (DTL)?
Sub ohm vape kits – also known as DTL (Direct To Lung) kits – produce a lot of vapour and are designed to work with thicker e-liquids that can deliver more vapour. 70% VG e-liquids continue to be the vapers′ choice for this kind of kit. If you′re looking for even more vapour, an 80% VG vape juice is ideal. These kits get through a lot of e-liquid and you might want to consider trying a shortfill.
What Is Freebase Nicotine E-Liquid?
Creating a vape that feels more like a cigarette, freebase nicotine e-liquids deliver the strongest throat hit. The higher the nic strength, the stronger the hit. Available in strengths ranging from 3mg (light) to 18mg (strong), freebase keeps cravings satisfied for longer, but is slower-acting than salt nicotine.

What Is Salt Nicotine E-Liquid?
Vapers looking to try a high strength, but want something a little smoother, often do better with nic salt e-liquids. Normally available in strengths ranging from 5mg to 20mg, even if you were to pick a 20mg e-liquid you′d still experience a lighter throat hit compared to freebase. This kind of nicotine is absorbed by the body faster for quick craving satisfaction but doesn′t stay around for as long.

What Is Hybrid Nicotine E-Liquid?
Featuring a combination of freebase and salt nic, hybrid nicotine e-liquids offer the best of both worlds. In terms of throat hit and craving satisfaction they sit in between salt and freebase. Most commonly available in 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg strengths, higher strengths deliver a stronger throat hit.

What Is 10ml TPD E-Liquid?
10ml bottles of e-liquid are what the majority of vapers use. They′re pre-mixed with nicotine and available in every VG/PG ratio, flavour and nicotine strength you can think of. Also known as TPD e-liquid, 10ml juices are tested and meet the requirements of the Tobacco Product Directive. The TPD applies certain limits on e-liquid, namely, any e-liquid containing nicotine can not be sold in bottles larger than 10ml and in strengths no higher than 20mg/ml.

What Is Shortfill Vape Juice?
The cap on bottle size won′t affect vapers using MTL kits, but, sub ohm vape kits get through e-liquid a lot quicker. Shortfills offer a cost-effective alternative to buying lots of small bottles. Available in a range of sizes: 50ml, 100ml and 150ml, a shortfill is an underfilled bottle of nicotine-free e-liquid. There′s room in the bottle to add nicotine shots, and the 0mg e-liquid dilutes the nicotine content of the shot. For example, adding an 18mg shot to a 50ml shortfill will create 60ml of 3mg e-liquid.

When it comes to picking the right nicotine strength for you, the best place to start is to look at how many cigarettes you currently smoke. Below we′ve added a quick table that should help you get going. You might need to try a few different strengths when you first make the switch as it′s always down to the individual. If your vape isn′t satisfying your cravings you may need to try a higher strength, on eh other hand, if your vape gives you a slight headache or makes you feel dizzy – you probably need a lower strength.
If you're using an MTL kit:Average Daily Cigarettes | Recommended ELiquid Strengths |
1 - 5 cigarettes | 3 - 6mg |
5 - 10 cigarettes | 6 - 12mg |
10 - 20 cigarettes | 12 - 20mg |
Sub ohm kits create a lot of vapour and use more e-liquid to do so, which means that even 20-a-day smokers will use a lower strength than what they′d put in an MTL kit. For the majority of vapers, a 3mg vape juice will do the job. If you do feel the need to go higher, we don′t recommend anything stronger than 6mg e-liquid – if you go any higher you′ll experience a very harsh and unpleasant throat hit.
Your average bottle of 10ml e-liquid will cost anywhere between £2 to £4, or even less with our multi-buys. We also stock plenty of £1 vape juices and our clearance section is the best place to find more of your favourites for less.
Every bottle of vape juice you buy will have an expiry date printed on it, generally, that′s two years after it's made – as long as it remains sealed. Once you′ve opened your bottle, the e-liquid inside lasts up to a year (this is plenty of time for most vapers). Out-of-date e-liquids aren′t dangerous, they′ll just have less flavour and their nicotine strength may have gone down.
As to how much e-liquid you′ll get through, it really does depend on how much you vape. The average new switcher may get through two to four 10ml bottles a week, but it will vary – this is why we always recommend having at least one extra bottle.
We stock juice brands from around the world, with best-selling collections from the likes of Riot Squad, Elfliq and Large Juice available. Working out which is best comes down to more than just packaging. We recommend you take a look at the different kinds of e-liquid that each brand produces. Some specialise in shortfills or salts, while others produce only certain kinds of flavour.
Once you′ve found your brand of choice, do a little bit of experimenting within the range. Remember, don′t be afraid to switch things up, if a new brand catches your eye – try it and see how it compares. The majority of our e-liquids are available as part of a multi-buy, and you can mix and match your favourites from within the same range as well as from other ranges.
E-liquids often fall under groupings, with fruit, dessert, tobacco, soda, menthol and confectionary blends on offer. In our opinion, the best e-liquid flavour is the one that stops you from going back to smoking! But we know that might not give you a lot to start on. So, our best e-liquid guide should give you a little more direction.
At the same time, you might be looking for something completely different – this is why fruit blends like blueberry vape liquid and strawberry e-liquid are so popular. When it comes to selecting a flavour, don′t be afraid to experiment, you might not know you enjoy a triple berry cheesecake vape until you try it!
